McLeod Plantation is an amazingly intact historic site once occupied by people whose complex experiences and relationships contribute to the nation’s struggle with slavery, equality, and justice. Purchased by the McLeod family in 1851, this sea island cotton plantation was the setting for its inhabitants pursuit of freedom and justice. Home to generations of McLeods, Gathers and other families until 1990 it also headquartered Confederate and Union troops and was the site of the James Island Freedmen’s Bureau field office.
